American Presidents: Too Powerful for Our Own Good? (pdf) The writers of the Constitution envisioned a delicate balance of powers between the president, Congress, and the courts. Over the course of some 200 years, this balance has often tipped one way or another. Responding to global threats, recent presidents have claimed vast executive authority over the executive branch, national security, military deployments, and even questions of war and peace. Do we now have a permanent "imperial presidency" that upsets the framers' balance of powers among the three branches? If so, how does this "new charter" affect policy making and citizens' rights? – North Hall #1006
