Seniors Help the Gauchos Stampede Over the Mustangs

volley UCSB topped the Cal Poly Mustangs in a brisk three-game match on November 12, earning their third straight win and furthering their chances at earning a berth in the NCAA tournament.

The night's match was the last home appearance for outgoing seniors Stacey Schmidt, Chelsey Lowe, and Lily Lopez, all of whom performed strongly. Of the seniors, Schmidt racked up 14 kills, Lopez recorded 12 kills with a .588 hitting percentage, and Lowe tallied an impressive 25 digs on the night

UCSB has now won 11 straight sets dating back to Oct. 29. With this past win, the Gauchos improve to 16-11 on the season with a 9-5 Big West tally

Gauchos Seeded 15th in NCAA Tournament, Garner First Round Bye

soccer The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team has earned the No. 15 seed into the 2011 NCAA Division I Soccer Championship.

With the national seed, the Gauchos received a First Round bye and will host a Second Round game on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.

This marks the Gauchos' 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. UCSB has entered the NCAA Tournament with a national seed four previous years: 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. The Gauchos advanced to College Cup final in 2004 and won the title in 2006.

Gauchos Defeat UC Irvine in Final 2011 Home Game

In a battle of the nation's fifth-ranked programs, UC Santa Barbara came out on top with a 12-10 victory over visiting UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Campus Pool, on November 12.

The first quarter was a seesaw battle with the teams exchanging two goals apiece. In the second quarter, UCSB opened with a three-goal run that gave the Gauchos the lead, which they never relinquished. With the win, UCSB improves to 15-9 on the season and 3-4 in the MPSF.

Portland State Uses Offensive Rebounds, UCSB Turnovers to Top Gauchos

wbball The Vikings, picked to finish first in the Big Sky Conference in a pair of preseason polls, used 17 offensive rebounds on Sunday November 13, turning them into 13 points and turned 18 turnovers into 20 points, using those differences to top the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team, 65-51.

Nicole Nesbit had nine points and five assists for the Gauchos who also got seven points from Melissa Zornig and six points and seven boards from Kirsten Tilleman. With the defeat, the Gauchos fall to 0-2 to open the season.

Nunnally Shines as Gauchos Open Season With Victory Over Chapman, 74-48

James Nunnally scored 20 points and Orlando Johnson chipped-in 14 as UC Santa Barbara (1-0) opened its 2011-12 season with a 74-48 win over visiting Chapman University (0-1) at the Thunderdome.

Mbball Nunnally and Johnson, both Preseason All-Big West choices, didn't lack for help from their teammates. Notable performances included sophomore guard Kyle Boswell, freshman point guard T.J. Taylor, and junior point guard Nate Garth.

The Gauchos remain at home for the next five games. They will host Santa Clara on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Thunderdome
