Jason
Lezak - Swimmer - Won Gold Medal at 2004 Olympics
Jason Lezak joined Irvine (California) Novaquatics
swim team at the age of five and has never left. He first
qualified for the nationals while a senior in high school.
In 1999 he won the bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle
at the U.S. Open. At the Pan Pacific Championships that
year, he won a silver medal as a member of the 400-meter
relay team. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he competed
in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay and his team won
the silver medal. He also swam in the preliminary heat
of the 4x100-meter medley relay; the U.S. finished third
in the heat and went on to win the gold medal. At the
2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, Jason broke the American record
in the 100-meter freestyle in the semifinals. He eventually
won the 100-meter and also qualified for the Olympics
in the 50-meter freestyle. He was picked to swim the
fourth leg in the 4x100 medley relay final on August
21 and helped the U.S.A. to a gold medal, as well as
a new world record.

Lynne Cox '79- Long distance
swimmer
 As
a cold water swimmer, Cox is known not only for her
athletic achievements, but also for her ability to unite
countries. In 1987, for instance, she symbolically united
the United States and the Soviet Union by swimming across
the 40 degree Bering Strait. Cox's tremendous athletic
ability also helped her in 1972 to break both the men's
and women's records for swimming across the English

Larry Dierker- Houston Astros
This former pitcher has long been associated with the
Houston Astros. Dierker recently resigned as the manager
of the Astros, the same team he began his baseball career
with as a starting pitcher. After pitching for thirteen
years, Dierker went on to broadcast for the Astros for
another eighteen years before becoming the team's general
manager.

Eric Fonoimoano '93- US Olympian
After playing for UCSB, Fonoimoana began playing volleyball
on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour
in 1993. Over the next several years he rose up the
charts with win after win, finally earning the King
of the Beach title in 1998. That year he began playing
international matches. In 2000, Fonoimoana and his partner,
Dain Blanton compete at the Olympics in Sydney, bringing

Carin Gabarra '87- US Olympian
After being a four time All American at UCSB, Carin
continued to earn respect and admiration from fans around
the nation. She is the 3rd leading goal scorer in US
women's history, MVP of the 1991 World Championships,
1996 Olympic champion, U.S. Soccer Federation Player
of the Year, 1987 and 1992, and was selected to the
National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000. Currently she
is the head coach for the US Naval Academy soccer team.

Sandra Nielson '62- Gold medallist
in '72 Olympics
Nielson won a gold medal at the1972 Olympics with a
time of 58.59 in the 100-Meter Freestyle.

Joe Redfield '93- Played for
the Pittsburg Pirates

Richard Schroeder '86- US Olympian,
gold medallist
This Olympian first swam and dove for the UCSB men's
team before winning a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics
in the 4x100-medley event.

Brian Shaw '88- NBA player, Lakers
At 6'6", 200lbs and over 12 years as a NBA player, Shaw
is no small opponent. Over the span of his career, he
has played for and broken records with, the Portland
Trailblazers, Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic,
but it was on the UCSB men's basketball team were he
first got noticed for Player of the Year. His current
home is with the LA Lakers where he continues to work

Robert Sherman '47- Tennis Player
Since 1965, Sherman has won more senior tennis titles
than all but one other player. He is currently #1 in
the nation for USTA Men's 80 singles.
