Sorority and Fraternity Alumni
Listserv Information
The UCSB Alumni Association established listservs to facilitate
communication between alumni involved with fraternity and
sorority members within their chapter. By signing on to a
listserv, you will be able to recieve and send messages to
others on that listserv.
What is a LISTSERV?
LISTSERV is an internet-based discussion group that can be
used to communicate upcoming UCSB activities and UCSB-related
information.
Who can join a LISTSERV?
UCSB alumni who were members of a fraternity or sorority may
join their chapter's listserv.
To join a LISTSERV:
- From the following table, click the sorority/fraternity
whose listserv you want to join:

- A new email message should open.
- The subject must be blank.
- In the message body, replace <your name> with your
first and last name.
For example, if Josie Gaucho wants to join the CW
listserv, the message body would contain:
SUBSCRIBE sbchio-L Josie Gaucho
- Make sure you do not have a signature or closing statement
at the end of the email.
To send messages to subscribers of the LISTSERV to which
you belong:
Send an email to the name of the listserv to which you belong:
For example:
SBCHIO-L@listserv.ucsb.edu
Place the Subject of the email in the Subject Line
In the body, type your message. Sign off with your first
and last name. Your email address is optional.
This is called sending mail to the list, because
you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies
for all the people who have subscribed. This address (SBCHIO-L@listserv.ucsb.edu)
is also called the list address. You must never
try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed
to all the people who have subscribed.
Don't Lurk! Introduce Yourself
Once you join a listserv, send a message to the listserv and
announce that you have joined so others know you are there.
You can encourage conversation this way. Don't forget to state
your name and year of graduation.
Which topics are appropriate for LISTSERV?
Information directly related to upcoming UCSB fraternity or
sorority active chapter or alumni activities, and UCSB, networking
and stay-in-touch conversations are appropiate.
The following uses of LISTSERV are NOT appropriate:
Selling or advertising commercial products or services
Sending personal messages to an individual subscriber.
Sending a message to tell someone to remove you from
the list.
Using the list to pass on or spam others with information
not related to UCSB; this includes sharing humor, chain letters
or other types of correspondence.
The list owners reserve the right to remove from LISTSERV
individuals who knowingly or repeatedly contravene the spirit
and intent of the group as described in this section.
LISTSERV is an open forum, and participants should feel comfortable
commenting without fear of recrimination or harassment of
any kind,
whether from list members or others, whether by public or
private communication.
Is there a right way to use the Subject: field?
Yes! The subject line should include the actual topics
youre addressing in
your message.
Here are examples of *incorrect* subject lines:
Subject: Hi Joe! Drop me a line!
Subject: >Re:
Subject: <none>
Here are correct uses of the subject line:
Subject: Alumni Weekend/ Reunion at UCSB
Subject: Save The Date! Founders Day
Subject: Birth Announcement
Note that if you change the subject of a series of messages
(known as a
thread), you should update the subject line when
you reply.
Do I need to sign my messages?
YES. You should ALWAYS include a signature at the end of your
message. At the very least you should type your first and
last name. Optionally, you can provide your email address
or other contact information.
Can I use e-mail to control my subscription?
Yes. Here are the most commonly used commands. All commands
must be sent to the LISTSERV address, LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UCSB.EDU
To Unsubscribe or Signoff from the list:
Send an email to:
listserv@listserv.ucsb.edu
Leave the Subject Line Blank
In the Body Type:
Signoff LISTSERV NAME your name
For example
Signoff SBCHIO-L Josie Gaucho
Make sure you do not have a signature or closing statement.
The above should be the only thing in the body, or your request
will not be accepted.
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the
LISTSERV
reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an INFO
REFCARD
command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UCSB.EDU. For more information
about subscription options, send a QUERY LISTSERV command
to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UCSB.EDU.
To Temporarily Stop Mail:
If you go on vacation or are away from your email for an extended
period of time and dont want to permanently signoff,
you may want to set a temporary stop mail. This is important
to do if you have an email system that provides an automatic
message return that you utilize while on vacation to notify
senders you are unable to immediately respond to their message.
If you do not use this automatic response option temporary
mail stop does not apply. If you do, please use this rule,
as not only an automatic message return will be sent to everyone
on the listserv, but will start a perpetual cycle of messages
from you to the owner and everyone on the list, causing chaos
to the server and irritating the other subscribers.
Send an email to:
listserv@listserv.ucsb.edu
Leave the Subject Line Blank
In the Body Type:
Set No Mail LISTSERV NAME your name
For example
Set No Mail SBCHIO-L Josie Gaucho
Make sure you do not have a signature or closing statement.
The above should be the only thing in the body, or your request
will not be accepted.
Is there an archive of past messages from LISTSERV?
There is no archive.
What do I do when my e-mail address changes?
Usually you will have a few weeks notice if your
e-mail address is going to change. You should unsubscribe
from the list using your old e-mail address, and
re-subscribe from your new address. If its too late,
and your old address is defunct, send an e-mail including
your old and new addresses to
chapter.event@ia.ucsb.edu.
What about privacy?
It is the policy of the owner/editor that by subscribing to
the listserv you make your email address public and available
to other SBCHIO listserv subscribers who wish to contact you
individually. However, the address of individual subscribers
are concealed from all subscribers to LISTSERV except from
the owner/editor. The list owners have taken this precaution
to reduce the likelihood that the subscription list will be
harvested by someone who wants to send mass junk
e-mail.
Miscellaneous important reminders
Never send a message that says (in effect) Me too.
If someone asks for
information that you also are interested in, sit back and
wait for it to
be posted to the list.
Never send an attachment to the list (e.g., a job description)
or use your forward key from an email which will place it
as an attachment to the next viewer. It will not be seen by
listserv subscribers.
Please keep this in a safe place for future referrals. Questions
about the listserv may be directed to the Owner/Editor, Asst.
Programs Director/Regional Chapters & Constituent Groups
for the UCSB Alumni Association at 805-893-4140 or chapter.event@ia.ucsb.edu.
