Meet Your Chancellor. Help Recruit Top Applicants!

Come meet Chancellor Henry Yang and our future Gaucho alumni at the annual Chancellor’s receptions for students who have applied to UC Santa Barbara. The receptions will be held throughout California and the United States during March. This is a wonderful opportunity for alumni to share their experiences with parents and prospective students. There will be an alumni reception preceding each event where alumni will have a chance to network with their alumni neighbors and receive a campus update.

Locations include Seattle, San Jose, Denver*, Irvine, Los Angeles, Chicago*, Washington D.C, New York (*The Chancellor will not be in attendance).

For more details on the times, dates and to RSVP for the receptions go to Chancellor's Receptions. No charge to attend.

Meningitis Vaccine Administered to UCSB Students

After receiving special permission from the Food and Drug Administration the UC Santa Barbara Student Health Services began administrating the meningitis B vaccine this week to 18,000 undergraduate students. The campus had to receive special permission because the vaccine has not been approved for use in the U.S., though it has been used in Europe. It is the same vaccine administered to students on the Princeton campus after eight students came down with the virus late last year. Earlier this year four UC Santa Barbara students were diagnosed with meningitis.

Alumni Association Nominates Five New Board Members
The UC Santa Barbara Alumni Association has nominated five new board members who will stand for election at the annual Association membership meeting June 7 at Mosher Alumni House. The nominees are: Carl Clapp ’81, Associate Director Athletics, University of Hawaii; Shanna Bright, ’93, founder and CEO of Beaming Bohemian; Ron Chiarello, ’83, President and CEO of Jetalon; Michelle Schneider, ’91, vice president strategic events at Salesforce.com; Teresa Carranza, ’09, Senior Financial Analyst, Mattel Corp.; Kristen Nesbit, Senior Associate, Fisher & Phillips LLP.

Alum Named Top Academic Administrator

Joel Michaelsen, ’69, has been named by Chancellor Henry Yang as the Interim Executive Vice Chancellor, the top academic position on the campus. The position was recently vacated by the retirement of another alumnus, Gene Lucas ’73.

Michaelsen’s father, Robert, was the Executive Vice Chancellor in the 70s and 80s and like his son, served as chair of the Faculty Senate.

Michaelsen had originally enrolled at Occidental college but was lured away by the then fledgling geography program at UC Santa Barbara. After graduating he taught at Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara, worked in the local movie theaters and finally enrolled in graduate school at UC Berkeley. His research is in the area of climatology. The search committee has been meeting since late last year to find a permanent replacement for Lucas.
