UC President Napolitano Calls For Cuts in Water and Bureaucracy

New UC President Janet Napolitano, who heads to Sochi, Russia, next week to lead the U.S. Olympic delegation, has called for reducing UC water usage and cutting her office staff.

In the face of one of California’s worst droughts, Napolitano said she wants UC’s 10 campuses to cut water use in the near future by 20%. At the same time she said her office would cut expenses by 10%, including staff and travel.

The moves by Napolitano follow an all-UC listening tour after which she called for seven new initiatives including:
• No tuition increase in 2014-15
• Increase and streamline transfers from community colleges to UC
• Enhance technology commercialization from UC laboratories
• A climate neutral energy policy by 2025
• Increased student services and aid for undocumented students
• $5 million in support for doctoral students
• $5 million in support for post-doctoral students
