AS Food Bank Associated Students Launch Campus Food Bank - Responses to a recent survey revealed that many UC Santa Barbara students struggle to afford basic needs such as food and school supplies. Associated Students, the university’s student body, quickly reacted by starting a food bank which provides nonperishable goods to anyone with a student ID.  Read more.
Your Highness UC Santa Barbara Hosts World Premieres of Your Highness - A crowd of 3,000 welcomed stars James Franco, Danny McBride, and Justin Theroux to Storke Plaza for the world premiere of the new film Your Highness. UC Santa Barbara enjoyed the honor of hosting the event as a prize for winning a contest on eventful.com, a web-site on which colleges nationwide competed for the opportunity to preview the film.  Read more.

WonderCon Ph.D. Candidate Speaks at WonderCon 2011 - UC Santa Barbara Ph.D. candidate and WonderCon panel member, Kane Anderson, led an academic discussion on gay super-hero costumes, arguing that all comics could be read as a queer space.  Read more.
Transphorm Startup Company Develops New Energy Conversion - UC Santa Barbara computer engineering professor, Umesh Mishra, and Ph.D. graduate, Primit Parikh, received $38 million in funding for their technology company, Transphorm. The funding was awarded based research done at UC Santa Barbara regarding innovative uses of gallium nitrate to eliminate energy waste.  Read more.
John Cleese Founder of Monty Python Speaks at Campbell Hall - After a free screening of The Life of Brian at Campbell Hall on April 3, John Cleese, founder of the legendary British troupe Monty Python, entertained a crowd of fans with everything from his unpleasant turn as Nearly Headless Nick to the Spanish Inquisition.  Read more.
UC Logo UC Campuses Seeks More Out-Of-State Students
With system-wide budget cuts increasing in the upcoming year, many UC campuses are seeking to increase the number of nonresident students in order to generate more revenue. Out-of-state students currently account for five percent of the undergraduate population at UCSB.  Read more.
Law and Order Law and Order Comes to UC Santa Barbara - On April 15th UC Santa Barbara hosted an all-day event titled Law and Order: Changing Television. The event featured an appearance by the creator/producer of Law and Order, Dick Wolf, who hosted a special screening of the series’ pilot episode.  Read more.
Deltopia Isla Vista Residents Celebrate Deltopia as Authorities Ban Floatopia - Authorities closed Isla Vista beaches for two weekends in a row this April to discourage the celebration Floatopia, a short-lived, spring-time beach party typically attended by thousands of drinking students. These measures, however, did not stop partiers from raging on as they brought the massive celebration to the streets of Del Playa creating a new party tradition know as Deltopia.  Read more.
UCSB Campus Week of Action Stands to Educate Student about Budget Cuts - Universities across the country protested budget cuts during the annual Week of Action, held April 11-15. The UC Santa Barbara Coalition organized on campus protests and sit-ins to bring student attention upon possible effects Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed $1.1 billion budget cut could have on the UC system.  Read more.
Better Environment Scholars Write Up Questions to Better the Environment - A diverse group of scholars published 40 key environmental questions in hopes of coordinating the agenda of scientific researchers with policy makers. The questions take into account the social, economic, and ecological trade-offs in resource management and if answered, will likely enhance conservation of natural resources.  Read more.

Yummier/Brainsickly First Year MBA Student Exhibition - Attend an exhibition featuring work by UC Santa Barbara MFA first year students Bessie Kunath, Emily Halbardier, Jae Hee Lee, Jared Flores, Nicholas Loewen, Rimas Simaitis, Ruby Osorio, Tim Brown, and Van Tran. The event, titled Yummier/Brainsickly, will premiere Tuesday, May 3rd and will run through Wednesday, May 11th at the 479 Gallery and Project Space on the UCSB campus. On the opening night, May 3rd, there will be special reception from 7-9 p.m.; all other viewings can be done from 12-4 p.m. during gallery hours or by appointment on the weekends.

A's vs Giants A's vs. Giants - Battle of the Bay with Gauchos!  Game and Tailgate Party - Enjoy an afternoon with fellow UCSB alumni and friends at the Battle of the Bay. This makes the perfect Father's Day gift! Gauchos, family, and friends are all welcome. The day begins with a fun tailgate in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot, where we will enjoy BBQ trip tip, chicken, delicious sides, and assorted beverages. Following the tailgate, we will head up to our seats and cheer on our favorite team. The event begins at 11am on Sunday, June 19 in B Lot Tailgate Area # 1 at the Oakland Coliseum, 7000 Coliseum Way Oakland, CA; the game begins at 1:05pm. Once inside the Coliseum, enjoy great seats in the Plaza Infield, Section 219, behind the home plate. Costs for the event are as follows: $50 for members of the Alumni Association, $56 for non-members, $45 for children 12 and under, and free for toddlers 2 and under (no ticket required). Costs include a ticket to the game and the pre-game tailgate BBQ which includes tri-tip, teriyaki chicken, caesar salad, baked beans, and assorted beverages including beer and wine. Angels vs Dodgers Angels vs. Dodgers Game and Pre-Game Reception with Gauchos! - Spend an evening with fellow UCSB alumni and friends at an Angels vs. Dodgers game! The day begins with a pre-game reception at JT Schmid's Restaurant and Brewery, just minutes away from Angel Stadium. Following the reception, we will walk over to the field and cheer on our favorite team! Free parking is available at the restaurant. The pre-game reception will start at 4pm on Saturday, July 2 at JT Schmid’s, 2610 East Katella Avenue, Anaheim, CA, and the game will follow the reception at 6:05pm. Seats for the game are located in the Right Field Pavilion, Section 248 row C, D, E. Costs for the event are as follows: $28 for members of the Alumni Association, $34 for non-members, and free for toddlers 2 and under (no ticket required).
