Gauchos Remember 9/11 — Volunteers planted 2,997 flags in the shape of an American flag, covering about an acre, in honor of those who died on 9/11. Michael Douglas to Receive 2011 Kirk Douglas Award — In recognition of his contributions to the world of film, Michael Douglas ’68 will receive the 2011 Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The UCSB alum will accept his award on Oct. 13. |

Campus Officials Work for Student Safety When Alcohol and Drugs Are Involved — UCSB’s Drug & Alcohol Program is behind campus educational campaigns urging students to party safely. If students drink, they are advised to do so in moderation and to avoid “play around” with prescription drugs. |

No. 8 Gauchos Shut Out Sacramento State, 2-0 — Eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara posted a 2-0 victory over visiting Sacramento State on Sept. 25 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos secured the win with goals from junior Machael David and senior Tim Pontius, who each scored for the first time this season. |

Late Goal Helps UCSB Salvage 1-1 Tie at Cal State Bakersfield — For the second straight match, sophomore Erica Shelton scored a goal, helping UC Santa Barbara salvage a 1-1 tie at Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 25. The goal was not only her second in as many games, but also her second of the season. |

Gaucho Claims Age-Group Title at Ironman 70.3 — UCSB undergrad Lauren Capone won the women's 20-24 category at the Ironman 70.3 competition. Capone, who competes for Elite Racing Team, completed the event in 4 hours, 52 minutes, 52 seconds, edging out the second place competitor by 35 seconds. |

Palm Center Director Celebrates End of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — Aaron Belkin, director of UCSB’s Palm Center, is releasing his new book, How We Won, detailing the sustained campaign to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. Belkin and the Palm Center played the key role of activist scholars in that campaign. |
