Awarding Excellence
The Alumni Association Awards annually recognize countless individuals who have made significant contributions to the university and society. A recent honoree, Jeff Henley, chairman of Oracle Corp., globalized the company's operations and guided the enterprise software giant through the Internet boom and dot.com bust.
Great GradsMany UC Santa Barbara alumni have gone on to greatness, and industries such as science, media, sports, and business have benefited particularly well from notable alumni. They include Robert Ballard '65, above, who discovered the wreck of the Titanic; Fox 2000 Pictures President Elizabeth Gabler '77; L.A. Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw '88; actors Michael Douglas '68 and Benjamin Bratt '86; former U.S. ambassador to Yemen Barbara Bodine '70; sports radio talk show host Jim Rome '87; and TMZ.com founder Harvey Levin '72.
VolunteeringEvery year, hundreds of alumni from every walk of life (and from around the globe) give something back to UC Santa Barbara by mentoring current students, participating in the annual All Gaucho Reunion, serving on alumni association committees, or becoming active in local alumni chapters.
All Gaucho ReunionThe annual All Gaucho Reunion is designed to reconnect alumni with colleagues, friends and teammates, to celebrate the university and its accomplishments. Although the Alumni Association is sponsoring the event, it is for and about the Gaucho family and involves the entire campus community. Campus and affiliated groups hold reunions and get-togethers. These activities are augmented by several university-wide events, including a festival and concert, as well as athletic events, campus tours and recreational and other activities.
CampusUCSB is one of only 62 institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. The Newsweek guide to America's best colleges has named UCSB one of the country's "hottest colleges" twice in the past five years. In addition to five winners of Nobel Prizes, UCSB's faculty includes elected members of national science academies.
Mosher Alumni HouseThe striking facility, called the "cornerstone of the campus," provides a permanent place where alumni can highlight their achievements as they foster connections to the next generation of alumni. The distinctive building provides a vital connection between UC Santa Barbara and the Alumni Association.
CommunicationCoastlines, the magazine of the UC Santa Barbara Alumni Association, serves to illuminate the innovations, development and happenings of UC Santa Barbara, its alumni and friends.
