Meet this Year's Alumni Scholarship Recipients

The UC Santa Barbara Alumni Scholarship Fund was established by the Alumni Association to provide scholarship assistance to current UCSB students who qualify for financial aid and demonstrate a high level of academic merit.

Since its founding year of 2009, the Alumni Scholarship Fund has awarded $59,000 to 57 UCSB. Our overall goal is to raise $3 million with support from alumni and friends.

This year, eight outstanding students were awarded a UC Santa Barbara Alumni Scholarship.

Cassidy Copeland is a third year student at UCSB and is majoring in Linguistics while preparing for a semester abroad next year in France. She has made the Dean’s List three times in her first two years of study. Cassidy grew up in a small town in Western Kentucky where her parents ran a small music and literature store for the past 27 years. She learned there the value of hard work in a challenging retail environment. She enjoys the study of foreign languages, travel, and literature.

James Hoang grew up in Hawthorne, CA in Los Angeles County. He is a second year Biology major with a current GPA of 3.81. His professional aspirations include attending medical school and becoming a radiologist. James states, “I greatly appreciate all of the UCSB alumni and friends who have donated to this fund for helping current students through this hard time of budget cuts.”

As a Book Arts major, she studies the relationship between word and image in addition to printmaking and book binding. Originally from Berkeley, CA, Alexandra would like to pursue a career as a graphic designer. She credits her passion for art to the experience of being raised in a creative and academically-centered environment.

Kathleen Williams was born and raised in Southern California and is pursuing a major in biological sciences after falling in love with biology in high school. Kathleen is maintaining a 3.89 GPA. She hopes to attend medical school upon graduation from UCSB. She spent the last two summers earning an EMT license. She enjoys the fact that she is part of a Gaucho legacy; her sister Amy is a first year student at UCSB.

Victoria Paige Wooley is a third UCSB student majoring in Biopsychology. She was born and raised in San Diego and graduated fourth in her high school senior class. Her goal is to earn a doctorate in either neuroscience or clinical psychology. Her passion in clinical research stems from her own battle with cystic fibrosis since her birth.

Tao Xie is 34 and grew up in mainland China. He came to the United States nine years ago and is currently studying finances and accounting. He has found the transition to a new country and a new language very challenging, but says that he has benefitted from the open educational system in the United States. While he had to interrupt his education after the birth of this first child in 2005, he is back at UCSB hoping to earn a degree and said in his statement to the Alumni Association, “I will cherish the opportunities this country has offered me.”
