He wanted a site where he could organize and completely control a government of France by absolute personal rule. He settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles and over the following decades he had it expanded into the largest palace in Europe. The Palace of Versailles was the official residence of the Kings of France from 1682 until 1790. He used it as a little lodge as a secret refuge for his amorous trysts with the lovely Louise de la Valliere Versailles is famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy which Louis XIV espoused.  French classical architecture is complemented by extensive gardens.  Your visit to Versailles includes your coach ride from Paris, the entrance fee and a private tour of the State Apartments (Grand Apartment, Hall of Mirrors, Queen’s Suite) and access to the magnificent gardens.  Our 2006 passengers rated this as the optional excursion that should not be missed.
